Cradle and the West Walks
Cabin Based Day Walks at Cradle Mountain, Strahan and Lake St Clair

Want to go somewhere really wild? Consider Tassie’s rugged side. Face the full force of the Roaring 40s that have blown in around half the world. Look west and know the next land is Patagonia in South America.

Start your trip at Cradle Mountain at the northern end of Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. We attempt to summit spectacular Cradle Mountain and explore the glacially carved landscape along highland trails.

After a couple of nights in highland cabins we make our way west into the distinctive quartz country characterized by jagged peaks, deep chasms, tannin stained streams and towering waterfalls. There are numerous short walks en route to the harbor village of Strahan on the West Coast. There we find opportunity to immerse ourselves in its renowned pining, whaling and penal history.

Be amazed by spectacular roads that wind through this stunning country as we journey to Lake St Clair in the center of Tassie. Walk through magnificent cool temperate rainforest squeezed between deep dark waters and towering spires. Climb above the tree line to take in views of inaccessible South Western Tasmania.
Our return to Launceston passes through the land of 3000 lakes – all of them home to the wily trout.

We spend time at Liffy Falls as we descend out of the wild country back to the cultivated patchwork of rural Northern Tasmania.

Cradle and the Walls of Jerusalem
The best of Tasmania’s highland National Parks

Experience wonderland. The Walls of Jerusalem National Park in the Tasmanian highlands is adjacent to Cradle Mountain and combining the two areas in this 6 day trip offers a great chance to get a real feel for Tassie’s unique harsh, yet fragile high country.

This trip incorporates a couple of nights in cabins and three nights under the stars in snug 2 person Macpac tents. Our days fill with walks that offer the best that conditions allow. We endeavor to climb the abrupt slopes of Cradle Mountain and take in the dramatic peaks and deep shadowy lakes all from our cabins within the National Park. Then we transfer to the Mersey Valley where we don backpacks and make our way up into the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and our base camp beneath majestic King David’s Peak.

Wonder at living fossils in the numerous tarns. Investigate evidence of ice caps scouring the land and discover floral links to the Gondwanan supercontinent. Step into this environment of stark contrasts, let your mind conjure images of ancient faces from knotted pines and swirling dancers in the lush green glades between imposing rock peaks.
